About

William Sheppard is a Masters student at University of Birmingham, studying History.

“My predominant research focus is on the Chinese Diaspora in Britain and I have recently written an undergraduate History dissertation entitled Sichuan to Soho: Chinese Migrants and Kung Pao Chicken. My MA dissertation will build upon this theme with the title Dispersed Diaspora: Tracing Transnational Food Ties Across Generations of Chinese Migrants in Britain.

From October 2026, I will return to De Montfort University and begin a funded AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award PhD entitled: Hybrid Identities: Generational Change and Integration among the ‘British Chinese’.

The goal of this blog is threefold. First, I hope to improve my writing and editing skills through regular practice. Second, I aim to use these short pieces as a way to process and refine my own thoughts and understanding. Third, I write with the hope that someone who stumbles upon this blog might find something they enjoy reading.”
